Hyeyoung Kwak South Korean, b. 1982

Hyeyoung Kwak’s conceptual practice blurs the boundaries between ceramics and fine art. In her poetic series Seeing the Sound of Rain, she exposes clay panels layered with mineral oxides to rainfall, allowing drops, rivulets and pools to leave their own traces across the surface. Kwak considers nature the maker of these works and herself its collaborator. By relinquishing control over the creative process, she explores ideas of becoming, existence and our ephemeral relationship with the natural world.
