Jucheol Yun South Korean, b. 1972

Jucheol Yun creates tactile ceramics using Cheomjang, a technique he developed from a 15th-century Korean tradition of repeatedly applying and drying layers of white slip. Extending this process to as many as one hundred layers, Yun uses a traditional rice-straw brush to build irregular marks and pointed textures across the vessel’s surface. He embellishes the resulting peaks with gold, honouring this historic practice while signalling the emergence of new traditions.
