Whang Sam-yong South Korean, b. 1960
Mother-of-pearl master Sam-Yong Whang’s sculptural works sit in internationally renowned private and museum collections. For Material Dialogue, his new work ‘Waterdrops’ will be installed. A dazzling work of art born out of a creative conversation between the craftsmen and mother-of-pearl arts patron Masa Kim. Whang is known as the eccentric master for his approach in cutting up the shells to fine 1mm threads, working with these strands as if weaving silk. ‘Waterdrops’ is suspended in the gallery space, allowing people to walk around and through the work to experience the ethereal nature of the materials drawn from the deep ocean.
